Enjoy this book as a travel guide or a historical reference

Why did I feel compelled to write and publish?

My Mother and Father and I and my family have traveled along this historic highway since the 1920s. You could say it's in our blood. Every time I travel through this country, I can picture my ancestors, who were pioneers from Europe in the mid-1800s. They crossed the hot, dry sands of the deserts, forded rivers such as the treacherous Virgin River, traveled through blinding snowstorms on icy mountain roads and left written records of their experiences. Indians, traders, trappers and priests explored the area before the pioneers arrived.

My son, Andrew, traveled several summers with me and experienced many of the same feelings I have had. He used his creative artistic talents in each chapter of the book to express what he saw and felt. Then years later, as a father himself, and a graduate in fine arts, he contributed the fine artwork on the cover of the book and was responsible for establishing this website.

I hope you find the intrigue and curiosity which this book attempts to provide by discovering the "hidden treasures" in a land traveled by so many throughout the past 400 years.

What makes this book so interesting?

This vinyl soft-cover book contains over 150 pages full of history. It is also a guide to finding many intriguing sites of interest along its path that exist today, because of its history. I call them the "hidden treasures" along Highway 91.

First, a historical account is given of each city dotting the map along the historic Highway 91. Such facts as who, how and why each city began, and what became of it, are published. Most cities were founded in the mid to late 1800s. Famous people, buildings and customs are included within the book.

Second, each chapter of the book discusses what is happening in each city today, and what you can find there. Some cities are full of exciting things to do, while others have chosen to keep a quiet profile. Some areas are blazing ahead, stretching to modernize and keep current with the 21st century. Others want to hold on to the sweetness of the past and keep those memories a reality for residents and visitors who appreciate the same.

How can I find Highway 91 today?

Today, Highway 91 is found by traveling Interstate 15. I-15 follows the general direction taken by Highway 91, with some streamlining. Today's path speeds through California, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. In Southern California, I-15 is seen on maps coming from Arizona south to Riverside where it turns further south and the 91 Freeway continues west into Los Angeles. The plan was for Highway 91 to continue west to the Pacific Ocean. It doesn't quite make it to the ocean, but terminates only a few miles from there in the City of Hawthorne.

What is Historic Highway 91?

Highway 91 was the main artery from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and on to Montana in the pre-1960s. In those days, our main mode of travel was by automobiles. From the early Model Ts to the magnificent, gas-guzzling monsters of the 1950s and 1960s, my family and I traveled on this historic byway many times. It was of the same vintage as Route 66, which traversed east to west across the United States. Highway 91 traveled from north to south.
